Meet Cameron, Owner + Founder
The grandson of two builders. The son of two doctors. It seemed his life could go only one of two ways. From an early age his artistic inclinations, summers playing in his grandfathers wood shop, and visiting his job sites, paved the way to a life long passion for architecture. Shop classes in middle school, and architecture and engineering electives in high school, further emboldened his drive to pursue his burgeoning passion. In the Fall of 2005, Cameron enrolled in the University of Colorado’s College Of Architecture and Planning, fortifying his goal of one day designing inspiring homes for wonderful people.
Life as it happens, isn’t so simple. He realized he got as much joy from building models as the design itself. Reminded that his grandfather, a carpenter turned superintendent for one of the largest construction companies in the midwest, regularly besmirched architects for not understanding how buildings actually go together. While concurrently hearing from architects that contractors are constantly hijacking their designs to make them cheaper, or “architracting” the design to make it work. Cameron started to wonder what his life would look like if he could build his own designs. Coincidentally, a new trend was emerging. The concept of the Design Build, having both the architect and general contractor under the same roof, working as a team towards the common goal of honoring the clients needs.
Upon graduating, Cameron found himself at a crossroad. A snowboarding accident and resultant back injury brought the realization that sitting at a desk for extended periods of time was unsustainable. Wanting to be someone his grandfather would respect, and having an equal reverence for the act of craftsmanship as well as distinguished design. He chose to further his education in a rather non traditional manner. Armed with a solid foundation in aesthetic theory and the many languages and tools used by the architectural profession, Cameron set out to learn how buildings go together from the people who actually build them.
And so the journey began. Over the next 15 years Cameron would work as an apprentice, roofer, living roof installer, pedestal decking installer, carpenter, foreman and site super. He even went on national television to design and build an off-grid tiny house for HGTV. With equal experience in both rough and finish carpentry including custom furniture and cabinet making, he began to find a real niche in the technical. The cavalry brought in when there was only one shot to do it right and all too often, after the fact, when someone else had tried and failed. He persisted in familiarizing himself with the other trades and watching intently, the successes and failures of architects as he brought their plans to fruition. All the while, moonlighting as an architectural designer in his spare time.
In 2020 Cameron passed the residential contractors exam. Making him eligible to act as general contractor in any Boulder County Municipality. Making his dream of designing and building custom homes, like the plans on his desk, a reality.
In his free time Cameron enjoys climbing, sunrise hikes, standing in waterfalls, soaking in hot springs, jumping in cold bodies of water, playing as many instruments as he can at the same time and failing miserably, traveling, foraging for wild edible plants and choice edible mushrooms, spending time with the people he loves, reading, writing his book “construction confidential” and hugging trees before apologizing for what he’s about to do to them.
Meet Alice
Alice, the ultimate entrepreneur and autodidact, came to Colorado from Dallas via Santa Barbara, where she began her career in graphic and web design. She discovered her love for interior design when it came time to purchase her first home where she DIY’d and self performed much of the work herself. Since her first purchase she has designed and homeowner general contracted interior remodels for each of her 4 rental properties. Her logistical and business acumen as well as budget savvy design skills make her an invaluable asset to the Acomita team. All in all, Alice is the backbone of Acomita Workshop. She manages everything back of house from scheduling, finances, contracts, drafting to even lending a hand in the field. She is the bookkeeper, pace maker and voice of reason that keeps our projects on track and on budget.
In her free time Alice loves to travel, snug with Lilly her pit-mix rescue, lay in the Maui sun, climb, hike and spend time with family and friends in the many places she has called home.
